Authentix Unveils Complete Item-Level Track and Trace System to Ensure Integrity of Distribution Channels
Serialized Authentication Solution is First Production Speed System to Enable Monitoring of Counterfeiting, Diversion Activities from Manufacturing Line to Store Shelves

March, 2006
Today’s distribution channels are exceedingly complex. Intricate distribution chains make tracking products difficult, creating opportunities for counterfeit and diverted products to enter the legitimate product distribution channel. Authentix, the global leader in authentication, is introducing a Serialized Authentication Solution to track products at the item level and enable brand owners to closely monitor distribution of their products for signs of tamper, diversion or counterfeiting.
“The Authentix Serialized Authentication Solution is easily incorporated at the production level with minimal disruption so products can be monitored from the production line all the way to store shelves.” says David Moxam, Authentix President and CEO. “It’s a comprehensive system that provides brand owners with a clear, real-time view into the distribution channels.”
Authentix’ Serialized Authentication Solution can be incorporated into existing production lines and has already been embraced by brand owners ranging from pharmaceuticals to personal care products. The system enables the verification of product authenticity, point of origin, and product pedigree at any point throughout product distribution channels.
“The Serialized Authentication Solution provides companies with a new level of security utilizing current proven technologies available for immediate implementation.” says Majid Fazeli, Senior Technical Consultant, Authentix. “To ensure flexibility, we designed a scalable, modular system that is RFID-compatible and will be able to leverage this technology when reliability and cost factors are competitive”
The Authentix Serialized Authentication Solution is a system that is implemented at the production line:
• First, unique, serialized codes are applied to individual items at production speed during the manufacturing process. The codes can contain fixed information, including the item code, date and site of manufacture, etc., as well as variable data such as sequential or random serial numbers.
• These codes can then be related to unit codes on boxes, cases, and pallets.
• Products are also given covert nanoscale authentication marks that back up the product ID codes.
• During the packaging process this data is aggregated to capture “parent-child” relationships.
• At each shipping and receiving point in the distribution channel, the codes are scanned and the information is verified. This data is then archived in a secure database accessible to clients.
• Regular field sampling is conducted to monitor distribution channel integrity by confirming product authenticity and pedigree. Any evidence of product tampering, diversion or counterfeit is properly documented (chain of custody) and is immediately reported to a central database.
• A secure, web-accessible reporting engine provides access to the data and generates reports that link electronic chain of custody with physical chain of custody. The reporting engine can also be configured to automatically generate event based alerts and notifications.
• This information is stored in a database and can be used to create and support chain of custody inquiries. The information can also be used as evidence in legally defensible case files.
The Authentix Serialized Authentication Solution can integrate data from multiple sources and the system is technology agnostic, so data can be incorporated into the database no matter what device is used to capture product IDs.
